In assessment of the well-known
poverty which seriously affects children and young people in Tanzania ,
SOS-Kinderdorf International decided to build the second SOS Children's Village on mainland during 2005, there after they started recruit staffs on 2006 and
official inauguration was done by then
President Kutin on 1st of November 2007. SOS Children's
Village Dar es Salaam is located some 10 km away from the city Centre, oposite
to the University of Dar es salaam , in the north western part of the city. It
is between Ubungo and Mwenge along Sam Nujoma Road next to Mawasiliano Tower and
it will clearly be identified by the blue roofs of the house with coffee brown
walls.
The SOS Children's Village Dar es Salaam Currently the
SOS Village Dar es Salaam have about 130 children ,comprises 13 family houses,
the village Director's house, guest house,
Administration block, Aunts'
house, Kindergarten block which has a
services area roofed meeting place known
as "Tukul".
Family
Strengthening Program (FSP)
Apart from caring for
children in the Village, the SOS Children Village Dar es salaam is also running a special program called
Family Strengthening Program. This is an outreach program which is geared
toward supporting children who are at much greater risk of losing parental care
and being abandoned. Oftentimes these children are from a single parent
households, sibling headed, parents have been affected by HIV/AIDS, or face
serious financial disadvantages. This
program started implementation at Temeke
District in 2008 and exited in 2012 . Currently
are based at Ilala municipal at Chanika ward where supporting 200 children from 53 families.
The
Kindergarten
SOS Kindergarten Dar es
salaam started official early January 2008 with 45 children. Among them 19 (7
girls and 12 boys) were from the Village and 26 (13 girls and 13 boys) were from
the community around. The fees for all children are subsidized to enable even
the not so rich families to afford the service. All the same we have budgeted
to offer scholarships to those who cannot afford even the subsidized fees.
Youth
SOS Children Dar es
salaam has a total number of 41 youth that include 16 boys and 25 girls. Boys already transferred to youth facility a
rented house located at Sinza since May 2012, however girls still living in the
Village. Currently we still in process of buying permanent land where we can build Youth
home for boys and girls. Educationally 11 youth boys are in Secondary school
and 2 boys are in college pursuing different diploma courses in Ghana. 8 girls
are in secondary school while 17 are still in primary school.
Holiday
activities
Dar es Salaam being a
Costal City is blessed with beautiful beaches. The Village has developed a very
good relationship with the owners of several beach resorts who have generously
invited our SOS Families especially during holidays and whenever we have
functions.
